Juneteenth 2024: A Day of Celebration and Education

Three years after it was made a federal holiday, Juneteenth 2024 marks a day of celebration as well as education.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the official end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day, June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved people were now free.

Though it has long been celebrated in Black communities, Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 18, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed a bill into law. This year, Juneteenth falls on a Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

Juneteenth is a day to celebrate the emancipation of enslaved people and to reflect on the ongoing fight for racial justice. It is also a day to learn about the history of slavery in the United States and to honor the legacy of those who fought for freedom.

There are many ways to celebrate Juneteenth. Some popular activities include:

  • Attending a Juneteenth festival or parade
  • Hosting a barbecue or cookout
  • Visiting a museum or historical site about slavery
  • Reading books or watching movies about Juneteenth
  • Participating in a community service project

Juneteenth 2024 is a day to celebrate the progress that has been made in the fight for racial justice, and to recommit to the work that still needs to be done. It is a day for celebration and education for all Americans.
